Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
***Ender's Game will be made into a movie was set to be released March 13, 2012 but is now pushed back to November 1, 2012! ***waiting***waiting*** Happy November Palehua Book Club!
11/08/11 I just finished our book for the month, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. If you only have the opportunity to read one sci-fi book, this is the one to choose. It's so different from nearly anything I've ever read, however, there is so much to talk about.
If you are finding it challenging, please stick it out, finish the book, there is so much for us to discuss!
***Update***
On Tuesday, November 29th at 7 PM we met at Sarah Ohki's home.
Thanks Sarah!
also in attendance:
Me!
Jennifer Aiton - Thank you for the book recommendation!!
Cortney
Jamie

Dee
Wendi Phillips - We wish you safe travels! Have a wonderful adventure for you and family!!

There were so many wonderful refreshments. They were all delicious! Sarah even made Molly Koch's famous mint brownies.

Some of our favorite quotes were those in the introduction of Ender's Game given by the author, Orson Scott Card, and readers' reaction to Ender's Game:
The highest praise I ever received for a book of mine was when the school librarian at Farrer Junior High in Provo, Utah told me, "You know, Ender's Game is our most-lost book." (intro. pg. xx)
Why else do we read fiction, anyway? Not to be impressed by somebody's dazzling language -- or at least I hope that's not our reason. I think that most of us, anyway, read these stories that we know are not "true" because we are hungry for another kind of truth: The mystic truth about human nature in general, the particular truth about those life-communities that define our own identity, and the most specific truth of all: our own self-story. Fiction because it is not about somebody who actually lived in the real world, always has the possibility of being about ourself. (intro. pg. xxiv-xxv)
The story of Ender's Game is not this book, though it has the title emblazoned on it. The story is one that you and I will construct together in your memory. If the story means anything to you at all, then when you remember it afterward, think of it, not as something I created, but rather as something that we made together. (intro. pg. xxv-xxvi)
And the favorite quote of the night pointed out by Cortney:
(Peter says to Val - he, Locke and she, Demosthenes) This is what historians usually do, quibble about cause and effect when the point is, there are times when the world is in flux and the right voice in the right place can move the world. (Chapter nine pg. 128)
Also, Saturday, November, 19th at 6:30PM The Relief Society will be shown the 3rd movie in the Love Comes Softly series, "Love's Long Journey".
And the wait is over!!!
Nov. 19th, Saturday at 11AM we saw the matinee for The Twilight Saga: BREAKING DAWN at REGAL THEATERS Pearl Highlands.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan 6/23/2010

Sarah Ohki hosted this evening in her lovely home.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel.
A vivid depiction of the life of women in a far away time. The practices of foot binding and woman's worth, though understood as culture, are still jaw dropping to read.
"A true lady lets no ugliness into her life. Only through pain will you have beauty. Only through suffering will you find peace."A very nice reader's guide was included. I liked the interview with the author. It was between Lisa See and her mother, author Carolyn See.
"Raising a girl and marrying her off is like building a fancy road for others to use."

We had to bid farewell to two beautiful members of our Palehua Book Club.
Molly, Trisha, you will be greatly missed. We love you and wish you the best in all your endeavors.
*Congratulations to Veronica Peterson for the arrival of Carl Rueben Peterson born at 7:23AM 8lbs 9.3oz June 23, 2010.

The Lucky One 2/18/09
Happy Valentine's Day! Love is in the air!
Thank you Cortney for hosting our meeting in your warm and inviting home.
This evening in attendance:
Cortney Nadig, Lynn Lambert, Arielle Klingler, Trisha Sessions, Molly Koch, Sarah Ohki, Jane Gorton, Kaui Ching, Ann Toilolo, Shirley Chu and Joy Paet
In addition to the farewell for Arielle Klingler, and presenting Lynn Lambert with a gift for the pending arrival of her son Masen, at tonight's meeting we discussed the book:The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks
Synopsis: Is there really such thing as a lucky charm? The hero of Nicholas Sparks's new novel believes he's found one in the form of a photograph of a smiling woman he's never met, but who he comes to believe holds the key to his destiny. The chain of events that leads to him possessing the photograph and finding the woman pictured in it is the stuff of love stories only a master such as Sparks can write.
We shared words of love in the form of:
Jane shared a poem Grow Old with Me by Micheal Rew
Cortney shared a sweet Valentine's Card given to her by her husband Aaron. (AWE!)
Joy shared the lyrics to the song A Groovy Kind of Love. *grins*
Arielle shared the following scripture with the word Love substituted for Charity: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Cortney shared The Song of Solomon 8:6-7
on their move to Maryland. ~*~*~
Lynn showing off the adorable onsie and booties made by Arielle Klingler. Oh, how we are going to miss your talents Arielle!
Lynn Lambert and Shirley Chu
***UPDATE*** Congratulations on the arrival of Masen Lambert. He weighed 8 lbs. 15.8 oz (sounds like 9 pounds to me!) and was 21 inches long. He was born at 6:37 a.m March 7, 2009.
For March:

Our next meeting will be on the fourth Wednesday of March, the 25th. We will meet at Joy Paet's home. Our next book is Princess Academy by Shannon Hale.
This is such a refreshingly, tender, sweet, empowering, impressive, lyrical tale - just chock full of words of wisdom.

Love Comes Softly and a Farewell to Elizabeth
Thank you Rhona for opening your home for our book club meeting. Our meeting this month allowed us to bid Aloha 'Oe to Elizabeth Baldwin. We'll miss you so much! Thank goodness for email! Cyberspeakingly, you'll still be close! I was about to list all the gals that have moved away that we still keep up with, however. . .there's just too many and I'd end up bawling!!!
This was a great meeting for book discussion. We talked about "Love Comes Softly" by Janette Oke. This is the first book of 8 in the series:
The first date is the book publication date the second is the date the book was made into a movie.

3. Love's Long Journey (1982) (2005)

This was making out to be exciting summer! After just reading Tell No One by Harlan Coben last month and then to dive into Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, my heart was going a mile a minute! Angels and Demons was terrific! WE were all impressed! I will put in a disclaimer that some were put off by the violence. However, it was exciting to find a book we all enjoyed so much. AND most of us moved right on to The Da Vinci Code this summer, even though it was never 'technically' a book club pick of the month.
This book club was also a farewell to Jennifer Croft who along with her family moved back to Canada.
There's a movie version coming out in12/19/2008 5/15/2009! Whooohooo!
