The House at Riverton

For September and October we read The House at Riverton by Kate Morton
Summer 1924

On the eve of a glittering society party, by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again.

Winter 1999

Grace Bradley, ninety-eight, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet's suicide. Ghosts awaken and old memories - long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace's mind - begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge, something history has forgotten but Grace never could.

Set as the war-shattered Edwardian summer surrenders to the decadent twenties, The House at Riverton is a thrilling mystery and a compelling love story.

This mystery had a lot of intrigue.
Thank you for hosting Cortney!

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt - 8/30/2011

Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman came highly recommended by Molly Koch and Sarah Ohki!
~ from goodreads.com:
Steel Magnolias meets The Help in this Southern debut novel
sparkling with humor, heart, and feminine wisdom.

Our August meeting was at Joy's home where we had a fun time going through reading group discussion questions.
In attendance:
Lety, Sarah, Cortney, Jamie, Sally, Joy, Rachel and a BIG WELCOME to Jennifer Aiton!
There was such a wonderful spread of delicious foods. I made my great-grandmother, MaMaw's Peach Cobbler and my grandmother, Nannie's Summer Slaw. We also had mini chicken salad sandwiches, a seafood dip from Lety, Sarah made Chocolate Chip Cookie Pecan Pie and a savory dip to spread on sour dough bread and Cortney made Mint Julips for us all to drink! It was all so yummy!

~*~*~*~some favorite quotes~*~*~*~
“That's what friends should do. cherish the good and pretend not to notice the harmless rest.”
“Don't grow up too fast, Darling. Age is inevitable, but if you nurture a childlike heart, you'll never, ever grow old.”
“But if you have so much fun, then why don't you get together more than once a month?'
She looked at me like a wise old owl and winked. 'Do something too often and it stops being special.”
wouldn't be complete for discussion without post-it-notes

It turned out to be a really fun month, too! On Friday, August 12, 2011, nine of us attended a 7:30pm showing of "The Help".
The Help by Kathryn Stockett was our April 2010 pick.

Happy 8th Anniversary!!!

We have a book for August!

This will be a book with much opportunity for discussion.

**8/16**Update****
Our August meeting will be
Tuesday, August 30, 2011.
7:30 PM at Joy's home
It will be an excellent opportunity to share book titles and suggestions for the rest of the year.
We will meet at 7:30PM at my home. Email me for directions! joyfulpie@aol.com

For example:
I'm reading this now, it was passed on to me by Sally Holstein. It's astounding and very special.
**update 8/6/2011** Really sweet book and a quick read.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosna
This suggestion is from our very own Sarah Ohki. I've had this on my 'to read' shelf for a couple years and think this will be a captivating read. *On a side note, this book was recently made into a movie and is in select theaters now.

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine certainly looks intriguing and is a suggestion from Rachel McGovern. It's also been on my 'to read' list and one I think would garner some fascinating discussion at book club.

It would be wonderful to have the remainder of 2011's book choices mapped out. I am especially interested in what anyone would have us read as an October(Halloween) book or December(Christmas) book.

The possibilities are truly endless! I am so excited to get together with everyone again!
Happy Reading!!
